Perché dovrei pagare se il software è rilasciato sotto licenza Open Source  (GPL, ...) ?

La maggior parte dei prodotti disponibili sulla piattaforma sono gratuiti e possono essere scaricati liberamente. In tali casi non è previsto alcun pagamento.

In alcuni casi gli autori decidono di richiedere un pagamento a fronte del loro lavoro. I due approcci non sono in conflitto (Vendita e distribuzione libera sotto licenza OpenSource): La  Free Software Foundationche ha creato la celebre licenza GPL, una delle licenze più usate per il software OpenSource, permette ed incoraggia questa ciò e fornisce qualche spiegazione sulla seguente pagina:
